Linux Wireless Network

robert | 03 October, 2004 12:37

I have purchased a wireless access point from Linksys, a WAP54G, a great product with a lot a features, but if you replace the internal linux based firmware with other availables on the net you can add a lot of more features.

I configured my Windows/Linux laptop to use the wireless integrated card, and I must tell you that making Windows use a WPA based 802.11g network was not as easy as I thought, the laptop accessed the network inmediatly when no encryption was activated, but I needed around 3 hours to make it access the net with WPA encryption, but that is another history, I will write here what I made on my Fedora Core laptop to make it work in wireless mode.

The laptop is an IBM Thinkpad R50p with an Atheros chipset based WiFi miniPCI card. I choosed this one because I previously knew about the good support that the card provided for Linux.

The installation instructions has been moved to the wiki page named "Installing Madwifi on Fedora Core with WPA"

Geocaching

robert | 02 August, 2004 11:50

What is Geocaching? Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

This is really nice idea. If someone has an extra GPS unit not being used, you can make someone like me a very happy person ;-)
