Canito November 2004

For you that probably do not know why I named him Canito, this is the name of the child dog on the spanish translation of Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy cartoon from Cartoon Network Studios, formerly known as Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc.

Errors after a massive Fedora Core 3 errata updates

robert | 23 November, 2004 16:45

After experiencing a lot of errors starting programs when a GNOME session is started (no background is shown and a lot of panel applets crashes) after doing a massive update of all the erratas for Fedora Core 3, I solved them executing a full prelink of the system, with the following command:

/usr/sbin/prelink -af

This force the prelink of all the binaries located on the directories defined in the file /etc/prelink.conf, ignoring if there is data on the prelink cache

Positron added to my FC3 repository

I have added positron (the synchronization manager for the Neuros Audio Computer) to my yum Fedora Core 3 repository

/etc/dhcpd.conf - no permission to read

robert | 14 November, 2004 19:54

I installed Fedora Core 3 on my home server but when transfering the previous configuration file of the DHCP server and starting the daemon I was greeted with an error message saying that /etc/dhcpd.conf could not be readed. The permissions were correct (-rw-r--r--); the problem was with Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux). Well not really a problem, it was personal error instead: I moved (mv) the backup configuration file to /etc, that placed the file without being tagged with the correct SELinux file context; the solution was to copy the file instead of moving it.

SELinux is a great enhancement but some tricky things can happen when people is not aware of it and think that only the traditional POSIX like security is active

New Fedora Core 3 yum repository

robert | 14 November, 2004 19:41

I have created a new yum repository for Fedora Core 3 at http://www.marcanoonline.com/downloads/repos/fc3/. It only contains currently the required RPMs for wireless networking using an Atheros chipset based card. A previous post of mine explain how to setup the network for Fedora Core 2 but nothing has changed for this new release. On a few days there will be another programs on this repository, starting with my patched version of positron (the synchronization manager for the Neuros Audio Computer)
